Our small backpacks were filled with water, blankets, sunscreen and some clothes for the night. We were worried for the return home, ‘cause we were using the train and Flaming Lips were closing the night just at the limit of time for the last service from Werribee to Melbourne.
We walked in direction of Smith Street to the ATM and then caught the tram. It was a perfect combination, in just 5 minutes we arrived to Parliament Station to play ‘spot the hipster’

The train was full of music lovers, hipsters and ‘people WTF is happening in this train’… as the station were further away, the city distances increased and it was amazing to see some hipsters saying good by to the train as they were leaving… it was drama… our thought was: ‘Oh! a hipster in this train is not going to Werribee, what a terrible feeling for that poor guy/gal’

People anxious, people looking the time tables, people screaming in the wagons with a stubbie covered by paper. I saw an old man chatting with some pals and showing them his cup of Winnie the Pooh, an awesome moment, he was going to gather shellfish near Altona.

At the moment we got into the Werribee area the sky was perfect and everybody inside the train step out with a smile. The buses were waiting for us and the way to the park was slow but I really didn’t care. It could be worse. No queues at the entry and the backpack check was very quick. Free Lipton Tea welcomed you… good.

The place, was fantastic, full of shade tree areas, a lagoon and the Mansion. But suddenly something disturbed us: the music at the Wind Mills stage sounded bad… really bad, was the band? This Town Needs Guns were playing at the moment… was it the equipment? we needed to wait some more minutes to discover it was the equipment. No bands sounded good at this stage, including Flaming Lips… very disappointing, a ‘Low-light’ for the festival.

In the Great Lawn we enjoyed the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble meanwhile we ate some sandwiches… we realized later that our food was a very good idea! The queues for food and drinks were loooooongggg

People hugging some old friends just now reunited for The Gathering, crowds waiting for money at the ATMs, but most of the people lying in their blankets, enjoying the music. When The Family Stone began to play Melbournians were mostly arriving to the event, but some minutes later the young fellows were cheering the old band and a funky atmosphere surrounded the mansion gardens.
We went to listen The Walkmen, poor sound… check… going to PVT. This musicians were really awesome, the development of the music, the joy they were showing… We love u PVT!
Seekae was also a Highlight of the festival, we were amazed for these 2 bands. Ah! Our Lady J was impressing people in the Le Bourdoir, great voice and performance!

Personaly, I was a little bit anoyed because the overlap timing between Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Bright Eyes, and during the time TV On The Radio were playing I felt CYHSY needed that stage, the same feeling with The Nationals, for me they were just another band I can give it a miss, specially because they were the only band sounding like s#it in that stage.

Well, Bright Eyes were brilliant, I was having all the fun, all the emotional moments, trumpets and guitars, I like it, I think we all missed songs, but, what can you do in just 1 hour? good set for the festival :) When they finished we ran to listen to CYHSY (what happened with the sound in tat stage!!! OMG :( ) But the guys are full of cheerful and complimentary feelings. The people were so happy, dancing, kissing each other, the guys playing another song, the guys saying: and special thank to you and you….

The time into The Nationals and Mogwai we were in a toilets queue… then Mogwai showed a powerful repertoire. In the Secret Garden I was dancing… in the secret garden they were eating, in the sg they were looking to the crops…

I was waiting for years for a Portishead show, I felt nervous and it was like a revenge from my past disappointment when I needed to cancel my trip to Coachella in 2008 (I had my invitation and credential…) I cut the Mogwai show and we were near the stage, ready to observe, to be there and not to loose a second in fights or deficient sounds… I was happy in this stage the equipment sounded really good.

When the band appeared it was a such a moment! The set was emotional, strong. I was happily surprised, I thought they would be playing more themes from Third, but this setlist made me cry. All the show was sublime, my neighbors were the ideal ones, listening, respectful…
For the last song Beth abruptly disappear from the stage she was giving hi fives! and hugs, running to say hello to the fans. Then she went back to the stage just jumping with a big smile to then just hide again her face with her hair and to drink some refreshments.

The set list you can find it here: http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/portishead/2011/werribee-park-werribee-south-australia-23d1809f.html

With a blissed heart, rapture and beautiful memories from my teenage times we walked to the Wind Mills Stage just to find a huge celebration clattering, like a headphone overloaded. Poor Flaming Lips…

We were there for some minutes trying to find a good place to listen better, a privileged spot, but no… it was time to go home, catch the bus, then the train… both full of nice people having conversations about the highlights… yeah, Harvest time, to clean the fields, enjoy the crops and to have a party.

Also! we have a photo gallery!

You have The Royal Gardens, The Royal Exhibition Building, Her Majesty Theater, Queen St, Victoria St, Elizabeth St, King St and many more.

Today’s event was not only a red carpet one in Federation Square, but it represents for some people a piece of Melbourne’s history, as well as their present lives.

We saw many curious people trying to find the best sightseeing spot, or trying to be well groom,

with a nice hat, good dress and perfect tan. We saw few people with flags. The 4 corners of Flinders St and Swantson St were full of crowds waiting for their opportunity to spot Her Majesty The Queen. Many people were waiting for hours, others arrived just in time for lunch break time and as The Queen was greeting children and receiving flower bouquets they were eating pasta, chicken or salads.

Photo: Flinders Station

People was exited, it’s very difficult to find Melbournians exited… Indeed, scholars and middle-aged ladies were the most active during the event.

We found a good spot in St Paul’s Cathedral, it wasn’t perfect but we shared a really good time with people from the city and tourists. The lady with the best spot was telling us how and where Her Majesty was going:

“She is in Federation Square, I can see some people cheering and the police is moving from another side…”

One of us spot some people with handkarechiefs…

Maybe one of the big mistakes in this visit was that the City of Melbourne didn’t connect speakers or screens showing Her Highness during her visit to Federation Square in the corners of Swantson and Flinders and many people went home very upset :(

We spot Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, we spot her fuchsia/pink hat, as well as the bouquets, the police, the horses and the Royal Tram.

Photo: Spot The Queen!

When Her Majesty got into the tram the crowds started to clap thinking: “I really want my next tram without tramcops and with air-conditioner… mmm”

Then the tram crossed the bridge, The Royal feelings blew away with The Queen…

… and people start to feel again the SMelbourne atmosphere.

Film-makers and fans will meet in one of the most multicultural cities in Australia.

The opening night, this 19th of August, will be screening an International Premier: Batas (Borders) a very awaited film from the director Rudi Soedjarwo.

Tonight, we had the opportunity to meet the starring actress Ardina Rasti, she interpreted Jaleswari, a woman living between borders, not only geographical but cultural and humanitarian. Ardina told us about how the Indonesian/Malaysian border is a zone with a very special way of life, and how conflicts like human traffic are now unveiled in the film. Batas is a film with a deep social content, it explores educational issues, rural culture and moral drama.

Film: Batas (Borders)
Screening: International Premier
Director: Rudi Soedjarwo
Producer: Marcella Sallanty
Starring actress: Ardina Rasti
Country: Indonesia
Year: 2011
Duration: 120 min

From home I can see the Mackay, the city of Coyhaique and the surrounding hills. The snow is moving forward, the inauguration day was snowing near the city for a long time.

An anxious feeling was enveloping the city, the next days are fundamental, a commission was voting the Mega Dams Project of HidroAysen. I have been talking with local and foreign people, almost all of them are against the dams.

The slogan of the Third Film Festival of Patagonia Aysen 2011, “nature and social movements” is precise. Conversation, debate, the exploration of new realities, the foment of a healthy and conscious environment, a respectful attitude with the Earth and society, were the target of this festival.

I felt that the people were afraid, but, why? of what?

Days are passing, documentaries, news, town gatherings, and reactions from a society in which the people has been highly bounded during the years, they are full of traditions, nature and culture to hang on to.

Evidence on documentaries of Elena Varela (Newen Mapuche), Guido Brevis (Aniceto, Razon de Estado), Brian Lilla (Patagonia Se Levanta) or Carmen Castillo (El Tesoro de América), left concerns, exalted awareness and fomented the role of people taking social and ambiental decisions which concern them all. They are exposing the emerging social movements confronting economic and governmental conglomerates, and the thin line that separates the latter.

The festival was ending, meanwhile people from the regional government was giving the green light to the dams, deforestation, aquifer destruction, ocean deprivation, end of tradition.

In the streets families, children and grandparents were waiting for the decision, they were concerned that the government was ready to approve the project, the interior minister said: “HidroAysen is good for the country” (“Para el pais seria bueno que se apruebe HidroAysen”). Despite this, people was still full of hope.

During the screening of Patagonia se Levanta (Patagonia Rising) lots of people were vigorously claiming their opinion and concern about the HidroAysen project. The documentary shows inhabitants from the Pascua and Baker rivers, their stories and lifestyle. The inhabitants display a completely different vision of Chile, with their particular dreams and local/global vision of the world. The Director of Endesa (corporation that owns the HidroAysen project) is shown talking about how ‘sustainable’ and ‘friendly’ the project is. It also shows technical explanations form researchers members of institutes, ONG’s and universities talking about their research and how the dams will damage a whole ecosystem and its unique biodiversity.

On the streets the demonstration was taking place with musicians and drums, dancers and flags. Expectation, peaceful waiting… Suddenly, like a dam in the middle of the forest, when the government representatives approved the project, the peace was broken. Security forces…

… that dam was temporary, is flowing now, its fighting against the limits and the oppression.

Guanaco (water canon), tear gas, children and adults, all together. Downtown was empty, either you were in the gas station soaked (where the resistance was taking place) or you were on your way to the police station under arrest or later going to liberate your beloved. On my way to the police station I stop at the film festival closing ceremony. The theater was in a deeply saddened state, but something was (and still is) in the air, a new feeling of re-vindication, impotence and sadness are going to be a new force to propose new alternatives and alliances to give a chance to the fertile and fragile Earth, as well as us and coexist without a terrible ending.

The music again, Boca Seca (patagonian band) and Richard Sepulveda (patagonian songwriter/singer ) opened the journey. We were few people in the cinema, some of us crying. It hurts. All the people in the stage were talking about how they reject the idea of the mega dams project. They know this project will destroy a fluvial and biodiverse zone, they are against easy money for the rich.

The organization showed repudiation for HidroAysen. Marcelo Becerra, film festival director, talked about how difficult was going to be closing the festival, but we need to take this as an opportunity and we need to do all that we can to stop the mega project and generate new alternatives.

The producers of “Patagonia Rising” were on the stage to receive an award, Fernanda Bozzolo could not speak, she was crying, Jonathan Leidich was calling to fight on this war.

It was a cold night, it was raining. At the police station, people outside were asking for justice. Cookies & friends. We were waiting, small conversations about the day and how the demonstration was, plans, they are creating, they need a good one to stop this project and others that are threatening our lands. Aysen is full of live, it is a festival of ideas and strength for all of us in Chile.
