The small town of Christchruch was made famous recently by the earthquake, however here is a list of some of the hidden treasures which make the town so special. I’m sure you won’t find this in a Lonely Planet guide:
- Marshland fruit picking; fresh fruit picking and close to vineyards
- Craycroft winery; hidden Italian treasure, beautiful historic spot
- Travis Country; wetlands, filled with exotic birds such as the pukeko and tui lots of lovely walking tracks
- French Farm Winery; delicious French food and wine from French settlers who arrived in NZ to make the region a French territory
- Barry’s Bay Cheese; Fromage francais c’est tres delicieux :)
- Rail trail; a walking/cycling track which used to be the old train tracks which linked Christchurch and Little River, look out for insects in the summer!
- Taylor’s Mistake; a popular beach for surfing and sunbathing with the locals
